Mexico State Congress approves new law for UAEMéx
The State of Mexico Congress has unanimously approved a new law for the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEMéx), replacing the previous legislation that had been in place since 1992. The new legal framework aims to modernize the institution's organization, promote progressive tuition-free education, and update authority election mechanisms.
A key feature of the law is the creation of a University Electoral Body, which will be responsible for organizing and validating elections for the Rector, academic directors, and University Council representatives. Elections will be conducted through personal, direct, free, and secret suffrage among students, academic staff, and administrative personnel.
To qualify for leadership positions, candidates must meet new requirements, including having no record of university disciplinary or administrative sanctions, no final convictions for intentional crimes, and no disqualification from public service. Additionally, the law establishes a University Ethics and Justice System and includes provisions for welfare, inclusion, and rights protection. The transition to these new systems will be gradual, depending on the institution's budget availability.
