Mexico State Congress reviews report on digital child exploitation
The ‘Disrupting Harm in Mexico’ international report was presented at the State of Mexico Congress to address the sexual exploitation and abuse of children and adolescents in digital environments. Supported by Deputy Rigoberto Vargas Cervantes, the initiative aims to foster institutional dialogue and drive urgent public policies to protect minors.
The report is a collaborative effort involving ECPAT International, INTERPOL, UNICEF Innocenti, and UNICEF Mexico. Findings indicate that abuse occurs across family, school, and digital settings, with no single space offering total protection. The study highlights how everyday technologies—including messaging services, cloud storage, live streaming, and artificial intelligence—are being utilized by aggressors for recruitment and exploitation.
During the presentation, local legislators called for increased digital responsibility among students and educators. The research methodology included legislative analysis and surveys of adolescents aged 12 to 17 across several countries in the region.
