Mexico State government and businesses agree on environmental agenda

The government of Mexico State and local business chambers have established a nine-point collaborative agenda to address environmental concerns. The strategy focuses on utilizing revenue from the Pollutant Emissions Tax (ISEC) to fund concrete ecological projects rather than focusing solely on fine collection.

Key components of the agreement include the installation of an additional air quality monitoring station in the southeastern metropolitan area, an intensive reforestation plan, and a restructuring of the ecological sanctions scheme. Mario García Valdés, Secretary of Economic Development, emphasized that the objective is to encourage the adoption of clean technologies and corporate responsibility protocols to prevent pollution at its source.

The initiative involves coordination between the Secretariat of Economic Development (Sedeco), the Secretariat of Ecology and Environmental Management (SEGAM), and the Secretariat of Finance. The expansion of the monitoring network is projected for development during the next fiscal year to improve the precision of air quality assessments and public policy design.
