Mexico State illegal logging linked to organized crime

Illegal logging in the State of Mexico has evolved into an activity allegedly linked to organized crime networks, according to PVEM deputy Vanessa Linares Zetina. The legislator emphasized that combating illegal loggers requires an integral strategy that targets not only those physically felling trees but also the financiers and coordinators behind the operations.

Linares Zetina reported having held meetings with the State of Mexico Attorney General's Office (FGJEM), noting that individuals suspected of environmental crimes have already been identified. She called for strengthened intelligence efforts, expressing concern that criminal groups may be receiving advance information regarding law enforcement operations, allowing them to evade authorities.

The problem is particularly visible in areas such as Nevado de Toluca, where vehicles have been documented transporting illegally extracted wood. The deputy warned that the issue extends across approximately 25 municipalities in the state, specifically highlighting the Chichinautzin biological corridor as an affected zone.
