Mexico State proposes free parking and restroom access
The State of Mexico is analyzing a legislative initiative that would grant consumers at least 60 minutes of free parking at various establishments. The proposal, driven by Governor Delfina Gómez Álvarez, seeks to amend the Administrative Code and the Law of Competitiveness and Commercial Ordering.
If approved, the mandate would apply to shopping centers, supermarkets, hospitals, private clinics, educational centers, hotels, restaurants, cinemas, and theaters. The initiative specifies that free parking must be provided without requiring a minimum purchase or service contract. Additionally, the reform proposes that public restrooms in businesses open to the public must be accessible for free to anyone, regardless of whether they are customers.
Legislators noted that the measure aims to stimulate economic activity, improve urban order by reducing traffic congestion, and promote public health and human dignity. The reform also intends to address security concerns related to vehicle theft. The proposal does not target businesses that exclusively provide parking services, but rather those that offer parking as a secondary service to their primary commercial activities.
