Mexico State Road Board officials accused of extortion
Officials within the State of Mexico's Road Board (Junta de Caminos) are facing serious allegations of extortion, abuse of authority, and illegal collections. Business associations have identified three specific individuals—Joel González Toral, the head of the Road Board; Misael Gómez Granillo, responsible for rights-of-way; and Iván Juárez Bárcenas—as central to the accusations.
Reports indicate that various businesses, including gas stations, hotels, restaurants, and automotive agencies, have allegedly been targeted for extortion. Demands reportedly reached up to 500,000 pesos for high-end establishments, often involving threats related to permits and documentation. This follows a June 2024 report where more than 40 inspectors were accused of attempted extortion. Local business and neighborhood associations are calling for investigations by state authorities to address the impact on the Valle de México.
