Mexico strengthens maize research and conservation efforts

In observance of National Maize Day, agricultural institutions and academic bodies in Mexico are emphasizing the importance of connecting scientific research with productive sectors to ensure food security and preserve biocultural heritage.

CIMMYT highlighted an agenda focused on integrating genetic diversity, science, and government policy to support Mexico's more than 59 native maize varieties. This effort aims to develop seeds capable of resisting droughts, diseases, and variable climate conditions while supporting both local subsistence and industrial supply chains.

In Chihuahua, the Faculty of Agrotechnological Sciences at the Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua hosted activities to bridge the gap between higher education research and field producers. The event included presentations on topics such as nanocomposite effects on germination, pest management, and the role of the milpa system in food self-sufficiency. Participants included representatives from the Secretaría de Pueblos y Comunidades Indígenas and the Centro de Investigación en Materiales Avanzados.
