Mexico strengthens mental health and sleep disorder services

Mexico is strengthening its mental health and sleep disorder services through specialized institutional programs. The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) has consolidated an interdisciplinary model for the promotion, prevention, and detection of mental health issues. This model includes approximately 470 non-family specialist psychiatrists, 530 psychologists, and a mental health telephone orientation service for crisis intervention.

In addition to IMSS efforts, the Sleep Clinic at the Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz National Institute of Psychiatry (INPRFM) has provided nearly 2,000 consultations between 2024 and 2025. Specialists there treat conditions such as insomnia, sleep apnea, sleepwalking, and restless legs syndrome. Data from the clinic indicates that between 75% and 80% of patients treated for sleep disorders also present one or more psychiatric conditions.
