Mexico Supreme Court Faces Request to Halt New Ayotzinapa Truth Commission

Families of the 43 missing Ayotzinapa students filed a petition before Mexico's Supreme Court (SCJN) asking it to overturn the 2018 ruling that created a new Commission of Investigation for the Truth and Justice of the Iguala case. Six parents, led by Felipe de la Cruz Sandoval, argue that the new commission would duplicate the work of existing bodies—the Commission for Truth and Access to Justice in the Ayotzinapa Case (COVAJ) and the Federal Prosecutor’s Special Investigation Unit (UEILCA)—and would fragment investigations, waste resources and undermine due process. The petition, dated 24 July, requests that the Court declare the commission unconstitutional and order the Federal Prosecutor’s Office and the Ministry of the Interior to guarantee legal certainty and punishment without creating parallel structures. The Supreme Court is reviewing four extraordinary revision resources related to the original decision.
