Mexico Supreme Court postpones Michoacán independent candidate debate

The Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) has postponed the discussion of a constitutional controversy regarding electoral reforms in Michoacán. The case, identified as Unconstitutionality Action 69/2026, was brought by the Movimiento Ciudadano party to challenge rules that limit independent candidates.

The disputed reforms include provisions that restrict independent candidates from forming a common identity or block to avoid the perception of a unified political group. Minister Arístides Guerrero García requested to leave the matter on the list after receiving communications from colleagues, effectively delaying the vote.

Grecia Quiroz, the Mayor of Uruapan and leader of the Movimiento Independiente del Sombrero, attended the session to advocate for the rights of independent citizens. She argued that the restrictions do not just affect her personal political aspirations for the 2027 elections but create barriers for any citizen seeking to organize without a political party. The court is expected to resolve the matter within the coming week as the Michoacán electoral process is scheduled to begin on September 10.
