Supreme Court postpones Michoacán electoral reform debate

The Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) postponed the discussion of Unconstitutionality Action 69/2026, which challenges electoral reforms in Michoacán. The reform, approved by the Michoacán Congress, imposes restrictions on independent candidacies, specifically limiting the ability of such candidates to form common political blocs or identities.

Minister Arístides Guerrero García requested to leave the matter on the list, delaying the vote. The legal challenge was originally promoted by Movimiento Ciudadano. The delay means the current restrictions remain in effect for the upcoming electoral processes.

Grecia Quiroz, the mayor of Uruapan and leader of the Movimiento del Sombrero, attended the session to advocate for the rights of independent candidates. She argued that the restrictions do not just affect her potential 2027 gubernatorial bid, but limit the ability of all citizens to organize politically without a traditional party structure. Quiroz stated that if the Court upholds the restrictions, she may seek recourse through international courts.
