Mexico Supreme Court postpones ruling on Samuel García impeachment

The Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) has postponed discussions regarding a project to maintain the suspension of the impeachment process against Nuevo León Governor Samuel García Sepúlveda. The proposed project, drafted by Minister Sara Irene Herrerías Guerra, sought to uphold a precautionary measure granted in July that prevents the Nuevo León Congress from executing sanctions such as removal from office or disqualification.

The impeachment proceedings were declared admissible in June 2026 following allegations of embezzlement and illicit enrichment. While the current suspension does not stop the legislative process, it blocks the enforcement of any potential removal.

Federal Deputy Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar, representing the Morena party, has called on the Court to resolve the matter on its merits. He argued that delaying the discussion creates legal uncertainty and institutional paralysis in Nuevo León, one of Mexico's most economically significant states. The dispute stems from a constitutional controversy filed by the governor's administration against the local legislature's decision to initiate the impeachment.
