Mexico targets semiconductor supply chain integration via Arizona partnership
Mexico is working to integrate itself more deeply into the semiconductor supply chain, specifically targeting testing and packaging processes. Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard announced a collaboration with the University of Arizona to implement a specialized skills certification program. This initiative aims to cover all 32 Mexican states by the end of 2026 to help companies identify qualified local talent.
The move responds to significant technological investments in Phoenix, Arizona, where approximately $100 billion is projected over the next five years. This growth is driven largely by Taiwanese investments aimed at reducing U.S. reliance on Asian microprocessors.
In Monclova, local authorities are also preparing for industrial shifts. Mayor Carlos Villarreal Pérez reported that the municipality is coordinating with local universities, such as the Tecnológico de Monclova, to specialize youth in semiconductor technology. These efforts are intended to prepare the workforce for an anticipated increase in industrial production by 2027.
