Mexico taxi sector faces 25% decline amid digital competition
The taxi sector in Mexico's Central Region is experiencing a 25% decline in activity, according to Javier Hernández del Ángel of the CTM union. This downturn is attributed to reduced passenger mobility and lower consumer spending among families, which has also led to a decrease in trips for recreational and entertainment purposes.
In addition to economic factors, traditional taxi drivers face increased competition from digital ride-hailing platforms. In the Veracruz-Boca del Río conurbated area, tensions between traditional taxi drivers and app-based drivers have led to an initiative to promote coexistence. On October 6, a football match will be held at the ‘El Jaguar’ Sports Unit between members of the Unión Veracruzana de Conductores de Aplicación (Uveca) and a team of traditional taxi drivers to encourage dialogue and reduce sector conflicts.
