Mexico teachers' union CNTE vows strike will continue ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026

The Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (CNTE) has told President Claudia Sheinbaum's administration that its strike will go on despite federal proposals and public calls for dialogue. The union says the protest aims to force the repeal of the 2007 ISSSTE law and warns that the strike will persist as the FIFA World Cup 2026 approaches, with only four days left before the tournament's opening.

Marcelino Rodarte, leader of Section 58 in Zacatecas, said the government's recent request to end the strike was not communicated through CNTE's official channels, emphasizing that the union remains firm. About 400 teachers have taken part, backed by roughly 60 unions, and the Asamblea Nacional Representativa (ANR) will decide on further actions and potential demonstrations during the World Cup kickoff week.
