Mexico Telecom Regulator Sets June 30 Deadline for Mobile Line Registration

The Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones (CRT) announced that all mobile phone lines in Mexico must be registered by 30 June. More than 48 million lines have already been added to the national registry, but users who do not complete the process will lose the ability to make calls, use mobile data, and receive SMS messages. Their access to applications that rely on phone‑number verification – such as banking apps (e.g., BBVA), messaging services (WhatsApp), social networks (Facebook, Instagram, Telegram), streaming platforms (Netflix, YouTube), ride‑hailing services (Uber, DiDi), and e‑commerce sites (Amazon) – will be blocked or severely limited.

Separately, mobile operator Movistar (Pegaso PCS) sought clarification from the CRT on whether operators could use existing customer data to link post‑paid lines without requiring users to repeat the registration. The regulator confirmed that operators may directly integrate the data they already hold, provided they meet the line‑identification guidelines and respect data‑protection obligations, thereby avoiding unnecessary regulatory burden while ensuring compliance with the Federal Data Protection Law.
