Mexico weighs 120‑day extension for mandatory mobile line registration

Mexico’s telecom regulator, the Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones (CRT), is reviewing a possible 120‑day technical extension to the mandatory registration of mobile phone lines that originally expires on 30 June 2026. The regulator says only about 61 million of the roughly 144 million lines have been linked to users’ CURP, leaving more than 82 million numbers unregistered and risking a large‑scale service interruption. President Claudia Sheinbaum has indicated a potential extension is under discussion but urges citizens to complete the process promptly.

Banks in Mexico have clarified that accounts will not be frozen or closed for unregistered numbers, but customers may lose access to digital banking services that rely on SMS codes for authentication, as well as other online platforms that use the phone number for verification.
