Mexico tightens regulations against corporate greenwashing

Legal experts from Santamarina+Steta have warned that companies in Mexico face increasing regulatory scrutiny regarding greenwashing—the practice of making unsubstantiated environmental claims. Businesses engaging in these practices risk legal sanctions, economic losses, and reputational damage.

In Mexico, the Sustainable Taxonomy published by the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) has established specific measurement and regulation criteria, which include audits by the United Nations. This follows a global trend toward stricter environmental accountability, such as the European Union's Directive (UE) 2024/825, which aims to prohibit misleading commercial practices related to environmental claims.
