Mexico to build six new penitentiary centers to combat overcrowding

The Mexican federal government has announced plans to construct six new state penitentiary centers to address prison overcrowding and improve security. The project, which is expected to be completed by 2028, will provide a combined capacity for 18,480 inmates.

President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the expansion is necessary due to the detention of approximately 70,000 people during the first two years of her administration. She emphasized that addressing overcrowding is essential for both human rights and maintaining institutional security. The new facilities will be operated by public entities, specifically the federal or state Secretariats of Security and Protection, rather than private companies.

The new centers will be located in Chiapas, Estado de México, Nayarit, Sinaloa, Sonora, and Veracruz. Construction is set to begin with the first facility in Sinaloa, which will have a capacity for over 2,000 people. This decision follows recent violent incidents at the Mazatlán prison.

According to Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch, the facilities will feature high-security infrastructure, including surveillance technology, monitoring systems, and signal-blocking devices to prevent unauthorized communication. The centers will also include differentiated modules to classify inmates by crime type or risk level, alongside programs for education, health, and social reintegration.
