Mexico to convert former corrupt police chief's mansion into school
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that Casa Tlalpan, the former luxury mansion of Arturo Durazo Moreno, will be transformed from a “monument to corruption” into an educational center. The estate, built in the 1970s by the former head of the Mexico City Police, was recovered in the late 1990s following tax fraud convictions.
The project involves converting the 6.6-hectare site into a campus for the Universidad Nacional Rosario Castellanos (UNRC) and a National High School (IEMS) campus. The university facility is expected to accommodate 4,800 students starting in 2027, offering degrees in fields such as Psychology, Law, Criminology, and Economics. The high school component will serve approximately 1,200 students with a focus on culture and arts.
The total investment includes 150 million pesos for general adaptations and nearly 100 million pesos for the high school facilities. The land has been legally regularized by the Institute to Return Stolen Assets to the People (INDEP).
