Mexico to Export One Million Barrels of Crude to Japan Amid Middle East Tensions

Pemex will send a cargo of one million barrels of crude oil to Japan, marking the first Mexican shipment to the region since the war between the United States, Israel and Iran began in February. The oil will be delivered to Cosmo Oil refineries in Yokkaichi and Chiba, with arrival expected on Friday, 17 July. The deal was confirmed after a phone call between Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, aiming to bolster Japan’s energy security after the Strait of Hormuz was closed. Pemex International will handle the export on a temporary basis, diversifying Mexico’s traditional oil sales, which are largely directed to the United States. The shipment is intended to offset potential supply disruptions from the Middle‑East oil market.
