Fernando Farías Laguna to be deported from Argentina to Mexico
Argentina has authorized the deportation of former Mexican Navy Commander Fernando Farías Laguna to Mexico. Farías Laguna, who has been detained in Buenos Aires since April 23 after being found with false documentation, is accused by the Mexican Attorney General's Office (FGR) of leading a ‘huachicol fiscal’ network. This criminal organization allegedly engaged in the large-scale smuggling of hydrocarbons by using false customs declarations to mislabel fuel as lubricants or additives to evade taxes.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that the transfer is expected to occur shortly, noting that the Foreign Ministry and the FGR are coordinating the process. The case is significant due to the alleged involvement of high-ranking military officials, including Farías Laguna’s brother, Vice Admiral Manuel Roberto Farías Laguna, who is already in custody in Mexico.
While the deportation route appears to be the primary path for his return, Farías Laguna’s defense has expressed concerns regarding his safety in Mexico, citing the deaths of several individuals linked to the investigation. The defense had previously sought political asylum in Argentina and noted that an extradition hearing was originally scheduled for August 27.
