Mexico to host temporary exhibition of Codex Azcatitlan

President Claudia Sheinbaum has authorized the Mexican Ministry of Culture to enter into a cooperation agreement with France for the temporary transfer and exhibition of the Codex Azcatitlan in Mexico.

The agreement, to be signed with the French Ministry of Culture via the National Library of France, establishes the legal framework for the manuscript's arrival and its subsequent return to France. The return is subject to a certificate of non-seizability to ensure the document is sent back once the exhibition concludes.

The Codex Azcatitlan is a 16th-century pictorial manuscript that depicts Mexica history, from their migration to the Valley of Mexico through the post-Spanish conquest era. It is noted for blending Mesoamerican pictographic traditions with European artistic influences.

This cultural exchange, previously discussed by Sheinbaum and French President Emmanuel Macron, also includes Mexico sending the Codex Boturini to France. The exhibition is intended to commemorate 200 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
