IMSS announces 12-point emergency plan to improve medical services

The Mexican government has launched an emergency 120-day program for the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) to address surgical backlogs, medical shortages, and labor concerns. Announced by President Claudia Sheinbaum and IMSS Director Zoé Robledo, the plan involves an investment of 11,745 million pesos.

Key measures include an 8% salary increase for approximately 500,000 workers, distributed as 4% to base salary and 4% to rent assistance. The plan also includes the permanent hiring (basificación) of 10,939 employees and the expedited recruitment of 2,500 medical specialists for high-demand shifts.

To reduce surgical delays, the institute aims to perform 31,700 additional surgeries, including procedures for cataracts, gallstones, knee prostheses, hernias, and hip prostheses. Additionally, the program allocates funds for high-tech medical equipment, such as MRI machines and tomographs, and seeks to improve medicine supply chains through digital platforms and new warehouse construction.
