Mexico to restrict mobile device use in primary and secondary schools

Mexican educational authorities, led by the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) and the National Council of Educational Authorities (CONAEDU), have reached a unanimous agreement to regulate the use of mobile devices in schools. Starting in October, a total restriction on cell phones and personal electronic devices will be implemented during the entire school day for primary and secondary students.

In contrast, upper secondary and higher education institutions will maintain autonomy to establish their own internal rules and regulations in coordination with their respective educational communities. The measure aims to improve student attention, academic performance, and social interaction, following PISA results that indicated mobile device use negatively impacts reading comprehension.

To support this transition and address student well-being, the government is launching the 'El ABC de las Emociones' strategy, focusing on the mental health of adolescents aged 14 to 18. This initiative includes the distribution of over 16 million educational guides for students, teachers, and families, alongside classroom activities and professional health brigades.
