Sheinbaum proposes cell‑phone, social‑media rules, critics warn of censorship
President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the Mexican government will present a proposal to regulate the use of cell phones, social‑media platforms and other digital tools in basic‑education schools for the next academic cycle. The draft, developed through national and regional forums with experts, parents, teachers and students, aims to protect children’s mental health by addressing design‑driven addiction mechanisms. It includes measures such as banning mobile phones during school hours and raising the minimum age for creating social‑media accounts to 16.
Social‑psychologist Jonathan Haidt, speaking remotely at a morning press conference, advised that regulation should focus on platform design rather than content censorship and echoed the proposed age limit and school‑phone ban.
