Mexico mobile lines ending in 0 face suspension due to registration deadline
The Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones (CRT) has begun the gradual suspension of mobile phone lines in Mexico that end in the digit 0 and were not linked to a user's identity via their CURP by the August 15 deadline. The suspension process occurs within a 72-hour window following the deadline, affecting calls, SMS, and mobile data services.
While services are suspended, users can still make emergency calls to 911, contact customer service, and receive civil protection or seismic alerts. The CRT clarified that the suspension is temporary and does not mean the number is permanently lost. Users can reactivate their service immediately by completing the registration process through their carrier's digital platforms or at physical customer service centers. Notably, the registration process does not require mobile data or credit, and the CRT stated that no biometric data is collected during the procedure.
The mandatory registration follows a staggered schedule based on the last digit of the phone number. Following the current phase for digit 0, the next deadline is August 31 for lines ending in 1. The initiative aims to combat crimes such as extortion and fraud by reducing anonymous mobile line usage.
