Mexico mobile registration deadline approaches for unregistered lines
Mexico's telecommunications regulator, the Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones (CRT), has implemented a staggered mandatory registration process to link mobile lines with user identities, such as the CURP. As of early August 2026, approximately 69.6 million lines—roughly 48% of the country's 144 million active mobile numbers—have been successfully linked. Over 74 million lines, primarily in the prepaid segment, remain unregistered.
The CRT has established a deadline schedule based on the last digit of mobile numbers. The first phase for numbers ending in 0 begins on 15 August 2026. Following this, deadlines will proceed bi-weekly through December 2026, concluding with numbers ending in 9 on 31 December.
Telecom operators are required to suspend service for unregistered lines within 72 hours of their respective deadlines. Suspended lines will lose access to standard calls, SMS, and mobile data but will maintain functionality for emergency services (911), seismic alerts, and direct contact with their service provider. Users can reactivate suspended lines by completing the registration process within 90 days.
The regulation is already impacting the market. The Competitive Intelligence Unit reports that the registration requirement contributed to a contraction of 6.3 million prepaid lines in the first half of 2026, adjusting the total active market base to approximately 157.1 million lines.
