Mexico-Toluca Interurban Train delays strand hundreds of passengers
The Mexico-Toluca Interurban Train, known as ‘El Insurgente’, experienced significant service delays on Friday afternoon, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded. The disruptions began shortly before 4:30 PM, causing massive crowds at various stations, with particularly severe congestion reported at the Observatorio terminal in Mexico City.
Due to the lack of available train units, security personnel intermittently closed station entrances to manage the crowds, which extended to turnstiles and exterior areas. Some passengers reported being transferred between convoys while already on board, further contributing to the delays. The increased passenger volume is partly attributed to Friday travel patterns and recent road closures in the Toluca and Metepec areas.
While official operators and the Integrated Public Transport and Train Agency have not released a formal statement regarding the cause, preliminary reports from users suggest potential failures in the signaling system or the electrical supply. Alternative land transportation, including long-distance bus lines like Flecha Roja, also faced heavy demand and congestion as travelers sought ways to bypass the rail delays.
