Mexico transfers Ex Ateneo Peninsular in Mérida to INAH

The Mexican federal government has officially transferred full custody of the Ex Ateneo Peninsular building in Mérida to the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). This decision, published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, expands upon a previous agreement that only granted INAH use of the ground floor.

The historic building, located in Mérida's historic center, covers a total area of approximately 6,532 square meters. The transfer aims to ensure the continued restoration, conservation, and research of the site. INAH currently utilizes the ground floor to house facilities related to archaeological heritage recovered during the Tren Maya project, including specialized laboratories, a museum, and a center for preserving pre-Hispanic goods.

By incorporating the upper levels of the building, INAH intends to strengthen its capacity for cultural research and the dissemination of Yucatán's heritage. The administrative transfer follows a process involving the Institute of Administration and Valuation of National Assets (Indaabin) and the Yucatán state government.
