Madera, Chihuahua Bus Crash Leaves One Dead and Over 40 Injured

On Thursday, July 30, a passenger vehicle carrying members of the Mennonite community plunged into a ravine about 150 metres deep near Madera, Chihuahua. The crash killed 18‑year‑old Lina Reimer and injured between 24 and 40 people, with roughly 12 suffering serious injuries.

Rescue operations were hampered by the steep terrain and a language barrier with the Mennonite community. Civil protection, the Red Cross, multiple ambulances and two state helicopters were deployed from municipalities including Madera, Cuauhtémoc, Guerrero, La Junta, Soto Máynez and others. The driver, Heinrich D. J., 54, was also injured.

Medical care was coordinated by the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) and local hospitals. Initial treatment was provided at the UMF No. 5 in Madera, after which patients were transferred to facilities in Cuauhtémoc and Chihuahua. The response highlighted inter‑agency cooperation in handling the large‑scale emergency.
