Mexico transport industry hit by wave of truck thefts and road damage

Transport companies across Mexico report an average of 40 truck thefts each day, causing multi‑million‑peso losses for the logistics sector. Victims say authorities do little to stop the crime and, when recovered, demand payments of up to 300,000 pesos to release the vehicles, with the Federal Prosecutor’s Office cited as a major source of these fees.

In the Veracruz‑Poza Rica corridor, transporters face additional disruption as severe potholes and flood‑induced damage at kilometer 13.5 block access to roughly 20 truck yards. About 100 heavy‑load tractors try to use the route daily, often becoming stranded, and no alternative road is currently available. Drivers have appealed to state infrastructure officials for urgent repairs.
