Mexico Treasury Flags Three Banks for Poor Performance
The Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público (SHCP) released the 2025 Evaluation of Performance for Multiple Banking Institutions, covering 49 banks. Forty‑six banks received a satisfactory rating, while three institutions – Bancrea, Credit Suisse México and Banco Shinhan México – were rated “not satisfactory.”
The evaluation assesses each bank’s contribution to the country’s economic development through criteria such as credit intermediation, resource capture, service quality, regional coverage, sustainable‑finance practices and gender‑equality measures. It does not evaluate financial solvency, liquidity or capital strength.
Banks that obtain an unsatisfactory result must submit a corrective plan to the SHCP for approval; failure to do so or to comply may trigger sanctions under Articles 276‑281 and Article 53 of the Law of Credit Institutions. Other banks, including Afirme, BNP Paribas México and Bineo, received satisfactory ratings with observations to be addressed.
