Mexico university trends: admission competition and unemployment rates

Data from the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO) highlights significant trends regarding university admission competition and employment rates for various careers in Mexico.

In terms of admission competition, General Medicine leads with a 10.4 percent rate of applicants versus available spaces. Other highly competitive fields include Stomatology and General Dentistry (21.4 percent), Public Administration (25 percent), and Nutrition (26 percent). Technical and design fields such as Graphic Design (32.6 percent) and Motorized Vehicles, Boats, and Aircraft (41.1 percent) also show high pressure on available spots.

Regarding the labor market, general social science programs report the lowest unemployment rate at 0.3 percent. Teaching roles at the primary, secondary, and preschool levels also maintain low unemployment, ranging from 0.9 to 1.3 percent. Conversely, the highest unemployment rates are found in Ecology and Environmental Sciences (9.1 percent), Environmental Protection Technology (8.9 percent), and the Mining, Extraction, and Metallurgy industry (8.8 percent).
