Mexico and Chile launch new tourism sustainability and safety standards

Mexico's Secretariat of Tourism (Sectur) and the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) presented the "Decálogo for Sustainable Tourism Investment," a guide outlining ten principles for tourism projects. The instrument will steer a portfolio of 773 projects across all 32 states, representing more than $42 billion in investment, and aims to attract responsible investment, create jobs and protect the country's natural and cultural heritage. The initiative was announced by tourism secretary Josefina Rodríguez Zamora and environment secretary Alicia Bárcena Ibarra as part of a strategy to revive international visitor numbers after the 2026 World Cup.

In Chile, the National Tourism Service (Sernatur) and the Subsecretariat of Tourism issued Resolution Exempt No. 271, updating technical standards for 15 adventure‑tourism activities and instituting the country's first formal regulation for bungee jumping. Developed with the Institute of National Standardization and industry stakeholders, the decree sets strict safety protocols, including age, weight and medical‑certificate requirements and mandates three specialized guides per client. Subsecretary of Tourism María Paz Lagos highlighted the move as strengthening Chile’s reputation as a leading adventure‑tourism destination.
