Mexico urges UN reform and defends sovereignty at General Assembly

At the 81st UN General Assembly, Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco, representing President Claudia Sheinbaum, called for a fundamental renewal of the United Nations to better address global armed conflicts and protect human rights. Velasco emphasized that sovereignty should be defined by legal equality among nations rather than military or material resources.

Mexico is actively promoting multilateral reform through the UN80 Global initiative, co-founded with Norway, aimed at increasing transparency and effectiveness. Additionally, Mexico is collaborating with Norway, Qatar, and Switzerland to strengthen the UN's mediation capabilities.

Velasco also highlighted domestic security achievements, noting a 51% reduction in the daily average of intentional homicides since October 2024. On the international stage, Mexico reiterated its recognition of the State of Palestine and its solidarity with Cuba against unilateral economic measures.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres met with Velasco, praising Mexico's historical role as a key ally to the multilateral system and its commitment to international law.
