Mexico Valley Metropolitan Parliament established to coordinate regional policies

Legislators from the State of Mexico, Mexico City, Hidalgo, and Morelos have signed a constitutive protocol to establish the Metropolitan Parliament of the Valley of Mexico. This new legislative body aims to coordinate public policies and legislative actions for more than 22 million residents across 84 municipalities and boroughs.

The parliament will focus on shared regional challenges, including mobility, transportation, public services, water supply, pollution, and urban growth. Representatives noted that the metropolitan region contributes approximately 23 percent of Mexico’s national GDP, necessitating strengthened governance and institutional solutions.

A key commitment is the Metropolitan Legislative Pact for Family Economy, which pledges not to propose or approve new taxes or increases to existing contributions in the 2027 economic packages. The participating congresses also agreed to maintain communication to ensure fiscal decisions in one entity do not negatively impact families in another.
