Mexican brands roll out “No Inglés” campaign before World Cup clash with England
Ahead of Mexico’s round‑of‑16 match against England at the 2026 World Cup, dozens of Mexican companies temporarily replaced English words in their brand names and product labels with Spanish equivalents to show support for the national team. The initiative, dubbed the “Operativo No Inglés” and promoted by the social‑media account “Fútbol a lo Vualá”, saw brands such as The North Face become “La Cara Norte”, Nissan rename the X‑Trail as “Sendero X”, KFC switch to “Pollo Frito Kentucky”, OfficeMax to “Oficina Máxima”, Mitsubishi Motors to avoid using a “llave inglesa”, Pizza Hut replace English sauce with morita, Carl’s Jr. rename itself “Carlitos y la Estrella Feliz”, 7‑Eleven become “Siete Once”, and many others follow the humorous trend. The campaign generated extensive social‑media interaction and linked marketing activity to the football fever surrounding the match.
In parallel, the British Embassy in Mexico issued a guide for English fans travelling to Mexico City for the game, advising on ticket purchases, transportation, safety, altitude adaptation, and respect for local laws. The diplomatic note highlighted the match as a celebration of the long‑standing friendship between the two nations.
