Mexico weather forecast predicts 56 cold fronts through May
The National Meteorological Service (SMN) predicts that the 2026-2027 cold front season in Mexico could include 56 systems, which is six more than the historical average of 50 recorded between 1990 and 2020. The season is expected to run from September 2026 through May 2027, with peak activity occurring between November and February.
In Chiapas, the arrival of these fronts is expected to bring not only lower temperatures but also heavy rains and wind gusts. Authorities have noted that mountainous areas and communities near rivers are particularly vulnerable to landslides and adverse weather conditions. In other regions, such as the Altiplano, low temperatures are already being observed during mornings and nights.
Civil Protection officials are monitoring the situation closely. In some areas, a fourth cold front is expected to arrive shortly, though some local coordinators suggest a trend toward more favorable temperatures and higher heat may begin in the coming weeks.
