North America faces extreme weather: heatwaves in Mexico and severe storms in the US
Extreme weather events are impacting North and Central America. In the United States, the NHTSA has issued alerts regarding flash flooding and its potential impact on national highways following severe storms, tornadoes, and lightning that caused fatalities in Indiana and Ohio.
In Mexico, a severe heatwave has resulted in 75 deaths and over 1,600 people affected nationwide. The state of Veracruz has reported five heatstroke deaths and 58 medical cases related to heat and dehydration, ranking third in the country for climate-related lethality. Simultaneously, the Mexican monsoon is driving heavy to very heavy rainfall across the northwest, including Chihuahua, and causing instability in central and southern regions.
In Guatemala, an unusual heavy hailstorm covered parts of the western highlands, including Olintepeque and San Andrés Xecul, in ice, prompting emergency protocols to assess potential damage to infrastructure and crops.
