Mexico wrestling referee dies after prohibited maneuver

Gerardo Germán Pineda, a veteran wrestling referee known as ‘El Búho’, died following a professional wrestling match in Mineral de la Reforma, Hidalgo, Mexico. The incident occurred during an event titled ‘Deslealtades’ at the Deportivo 11 de Julio.

During a match involving El Hijo de Fishman and Máscara Sagrada NG, El Hijo de Fishman executed a ‘martinete’ (piledriver) on Pineda. The maneuver is prohibited in the sport due to the high risk of severe cervical spine injuries. Witnesses reported that Pineda fell heavily, striking his spine and head. Although paramedics arrived at the scene, they were unable to revive him.

El Hijo de Fishman was detained by authorities for investigation. The promotion, El Patrón Espectáculos, stated it is providing legal assistance and remains in contact with Pineda’s family. Pineda had a long career in the industry, serving first as a wrestler and later as a referee for nearly three decades.
