Tamaulipas posts second‑fastest economic growth in Mexico, 2026

The state of Tamaulipas recorded a 5.2% annual increase in economic activity in the first quarter of 2026, making it the second‑fastest growing region in Mexico after Hidalgo, while the national average was only 0.3%. According to INEGI’s Quarterly State Economic Activity Indicator (ITAEE), the growth was driven by a 16.5% rise in primary activities and nearly 10% growth in secondary (industry and construction) sectors, with the tertiary sector also outperforming the national average.

Tamaulipas contributed the largest share to national growth, adding 0.16 percentage points, ahead of the State of Mexico, Hidalgo and Nuevo León. The governor, Américo Villarreal Anaya, highlighted major logistics projects such as the Puerto Norte de Matamoros, the Puerto Interior de Ciudad Victoria and the Polo de Desarrollo para el Bienestar de Altamira, with total infrastructure investment around USD 21 billion. The state also led Mexico in commercial flow to the United States, accounting for 42.1% of road freight, 49% of rail freight and 49.4% of maritime freight.

These developments are presented as part of a coordinated effort with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s federal government to boost competitiveness, employment and overall national development.
