Mexico's 2027 Election Reforms Expand Youth Participation and Accelerate Candidate Selection

Nuevo León approved a constitutional reform that lowers the minimum age to run for public office. The required age for the governorship drops from 30 to 28 years, and the eligibility for local deputies and municipal positions falls from 21 to 18 years. The changes take effect the day after publication in the state’s official newspaper and will apply to the 2026‑2027 electoral cycle.

Morena, the ruling party, said it intends to announce the coordinators who will head its 2027 electoral campaigns before December, ahead of the deadline set by its internal rules. Party official Gilberto Gutiérrez Lara noted that the registration of gubernatorial aspirants has already closed and that the party will sequentially name state, district, municipal and local coordinators through a process overseen by the National Electoral Institute. Both moves are presented as efforts to broaden youth involvement and streamline the party’s preparation for the upcoming elections.
