Mexico's 2027 elections confront PRI crisis and Morena's waning advantage

Prominent PRI figure Lili Urban from Tecámac announced her departure from the party, joining former deputy David Parra in resigning and denouncing internal authoritarianism. Their exits add to a wave of departures by local PRI leaders in the State of Mexico, weakening the party’s territorial structure ahead of the 2027 elections and risking a vote share below ten percent in the state.

Analysts also warn that the ruling Morena coalition’s previously dominant position is eroding. Recent polls show tighter races in key states such as Michoacán, Sinaloa, Zacatecas, Campeche and Nuevo León, reflecting public dissatisfaction with economic, social and security outcomes. Potential U.S. accusations linking some Morena politicians to criminal groups further complicate the picture. The selection of Morena’s gubernatorial candidate, now a critical decision for President‑elect Claudia Sheinbaum, could determine the party’s performance in the upcoming elections.
