Mexico's 2027 elections face rule‑of‑law concerns and campaign‑timing disputes

Mexico is preparing for its 2027 elections, which will decide 17 governorships, local congresses, mayoralties and seats in the federal Chamber of Deputies. Analysts warn that the rule of law is weakening, citing growing polarization, stagnant economic growth, widening poverty and the perception that political decisions are increasingly driven by party interests rather than legal norms.

In the capital, the civil society group Somos Mexico CDMX urged the city’s electoral institute (IECM) to enforce strict limits on pre‑campaign propaganda. Its leader, Juan Manuel Orozco, warned that premature political advertising has previously littered streets with over 211 tonnes of discarded material, harming the urban environment and undermining democratic fairness. He called for clear rules and sanctions to prevent such early campaigning ahead of the 2027 vote.
