Mexico faces rapid demographic aging and rising care needs
Mexico is undergoing a rapid demographic shift as its population ages. According to INEGI and CONAPO, there are now over 17 million people aged 60 and older, representing approximately 14% of the population. Projections suggest that by 2030, the proportion of older adults will exceed that of children under 14, and by 2050, one in four citizens will be of retirement age.
This transition brings significant socioeconomic challenges. Research from UNAM highlights that elderly migrants returning from the United States face higher rates of multimorbidity and functional dependency. Additionally, the burden of unpaid care work falls disproportionately on women, who perform 76% of these tasks, often creating a poverty trap. The rise in single-person households, which reached 14% in 2023, further complicates social support structures.
In response, institutions are implementing various programs. The IMSS reported over 303,000 enrollments in its Active Aging Program (PREA) during the first half of 2026, aimed at maintaining functional independence through physical and cognitive activities. Meanwhile, government welfare programs like the 'Pensión para el Bienestar' continue to provide constitutional income support to hundreds of thousands of seniors to promote dignity and autonomy.
