AMD invests up to $5 billion in Anthropic and supplies 2 GW of AI chips

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced a strategic partnership with AI startup Anthropic that includes an equity investment of up to $5 billion (about €4.35 billion) and a commitment to provide up to 2 gigawatts of compute power using its Instinct MI450 series accelerators. The hardware will be delivered in AMD’s Helios rack‑scale platform, which combines MI455X GPUs, EPYC “Venice” CPUs, Pensando networking and the ROCm software stack. The first gigawatt of capacity is slated to become operational in the first half of 2027. AMD’s CEO Lisa Su said the deal “brings together Anthropic’s leadership in frontier AI with the full strength of AMD high‑performance computing.” Anthropic’s co‑founder Tom Brown added that the partnership secures the compute needed to keep its Claude models competitive. The agreement is intended to challenge Nvidia’s dominance in AI hardware by creating a vertically integrated solution and a multi‑year engineering collaboration to optimise Claude on AMD platforms.
