Mexico's basic education cycle jeopardized by CNTE strike and coordination efforts

The Instituto de la Educación Básica del Estado de Morelos (IEBEM) has intensified coordination for the orderly closure of the 2025‑2026 school cycle. Over 1,800 education officials attended three‑day meetings in Cuernavaca to unify accreditation criteria, update school information, address migrant education and plan administrative actions.

At the same time, the nationwide teachers' strike organized by the Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (CNTE) threatens the conclusion of the cycle for roughly 1.39 million basic‑education students. As of 5 June, Oaxaca reported 10,653 schools closed (80.61% of its public schools), with Chiapas, Zacatecas, Guerrero and Michoacán also heavily affected. Nationwide the strike impacts 8.49% of public schools, involving 88,106 teachers across several states. The stoppage has already cost about 586 million pesos and could exceed 879 million pesos if it continues, raising concerns over lost instructional time and the right to education.
