Mexico's basic food basket price drops in June

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) reported that the cost of the minimum basic basket needed to lift a person out of income poverty fell 0.8 % from May to June, though it remains 3.9 % higher than a year earlier. In urban areas a household of four would need about 19,522.88 pesos monthly, while in rural areas the figure is 14,015.88 pesos. The per‑person basket price in June was 4,888.22 pesos, reflecting a 3.4 % annual increase.

At the Adolfo López Mateos market in Cuernavaca, Morelos, consumers saw lower prices for eggs (from 40 pesos per dozen) and a range of seasonal fruits such as oranges, papaya and mango. Meat prices stayed stable, while potatoes rose to 35 pesos per kilogram. Vegetables like tomatoes and onions remained inexpensive, and seafood prices were largely unchanged.

Analysts linked the modest moderation in the basket cost to declines in fruit and vegetable prices, noting that inflation is expected to close the year near 4.2 %.
