Mexico's Bienestar Initiative Rolls Out Welfare Cards and Hunts Abandoned Homes
The State of Mexico’s Bienestar secretariat continued the distribution of plastic welfare cards for the Mujeres con Bienestar Edomex 2026 program on Friday, June 5. Beneficiaries were instructed to attend designated municipal sites with official ID, proof of address, CURP and birth certificate. New entrants and women on the waiting list will receive a double payment of 5,000 pesos covering two bimesters.
Meanwhile, the federal government’s Programa de Vivienda para el Bienestar launched a massive census in Morelos to identify and regularize abandoned or illegally occupied houses. Officials have already catalogued about 7,000 of an intended 11,000 homes, with Temixco and Xochitepec identified as hotspots. The program aims to restore basic services such as water, drainage and electricity and to secure legal titles for current occupants and future buyers. As one official explained, "El concepto de 'vivienda emproblemada' no siempre significa que el lugar esté vacío; muchos departamentos están habitados por familias que no tienen las escrituras."
