Mexico’s CNTE teachers union threatens protests in World Cup host cities Monterrey and Guadalajara

The Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (CNTE) warned that, without a settlement with the federal government, it could shift its demonstrations to the 2026 World Cup venues of Monterrey and Guadalajara. The teachers' strike, now in its 11th day, has already seen a march from the Zócalo to the Estadio Ciudad de México, where participants faced security forces after vandalizing light‑rail stations and police equipment.

Negotiations are slated for Wednesday, with CNTE representatives meeting officials from the Secretaría de Gobernación, the Secretaría de Educación Pública and the ISSSTE. The union’s demands centre on the repeal of the 2007 ISSSTE law, a measure the government says would affect roughly 20 % of Mexico’s GDP. President‑elect Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated that such a repeal would be financially untenable. Authorities have advised motorists to use alternative routes to avoid potential disruptions during the World Cup opening ceremonies.
